EVENT DAY, THANKS FOR VOLUNTEERING

WHERE TO GO: Check your assignment, arrive on time and sign in.
If assigned to Exchange 6, the address is at the end of Leg 6. The outgoing runner receives the baton at Exchange 6 and runs Leg 7 to Exchange 7.

WHAT TO BRING:
Hat, phone, snack, sunscreen, sunglasses, watch, water
Optional: binoculars, camera (useful to document rule violations)

AT NIGHT ALSO BRING:
Flashlight, hat or visor (useful to reduce glare of vehicle headlights)
  Warm clothing, reflective vest

DO NOT BRING:
  Alcohol
  Children
  Headphones
  Pets

THE GOLDEN GATE RELAY WILL PROVIDE:
Clipboard with Exchange Record, maps, rules, pen
Cones (2) to mark the Baton Exchange Area
  Garbage bags
Incident Report form (for teams to report rule violations)
Portable toilets (if bathrooms are not available)
  A big thank you!

VOLUNTEER DUTIES (view Terms: Exchange, Van Exchange, Active Van, etc.)
Volunteer 1 (Exchange Captain):
Mark the Baton Exchange Area with two cones (with help from Course Director).
Record Baton Exchange Times of first and last teams on Exchange Records.
Record rule/safety violations on Exchange Records.
Give breaks to other volunteers or fill in for a volunteer that arrives late or fails to show.

Volunteer 2 (Baton Exchange Area Monitor):
Prevent runners from being forced onto the road by spectators obstructing the shoulder.
Ensure that only outgoing runners wait near Baton Exchange Areas.
Review maps and alert outgoing runners of problems.
Request quiet at night near residential areas.

Volunteer 3 (Active Van/Parking Monitor):
Do not allow vans to force runners onto the road by obstructing the shoulder. Vans may not park for 500 feet BEFORE Exchanges so incoming runners have a clear view.
Allow only Active Vans to park in Runner Exchanges. Both team vans (Active and Resting) may park in Van Exchanges (6, 12, 18, 24, 30).
  Keep Exchanges clean.

Volunteer 4 (Sighter, if available):
Call team numbers from bibs of incoming runners from 50 yards before Exchange so the correct outgoing runners enter Baton Exchange Areas.

EXCHANGE CLOSURE
Do not leave the Exchange until your Director confirms that the last runner has passed.
Clean the Exchange (bag the trash) so that we will be allowed to use the site in future years.
Return completed Exchange Record, clipboard and cones to your Director or sweep vehicle.

THANKS FOR VOLUNTEERING!
