RELAY WALK 2009 DEDICATION TO KATIE GRACE, RICH, CAROLYN
THROUGH ORGANS 'R' US ("ORU"), THE RELAY WALK PROMOTES
The transfer of the baton from walker to walker symbolizes the transfer of an organ from donor to recipient. The
2005-2008 Relay Walks were dedicated to Gilda Vallente who received two kidneys
on February 5, 2006, four-year-old Katalina Thang who received a new
heart and lungs on September 4, 2006, and Shawn Stockwell who received a new heart
on July 31, 2008.
KATIE GRACE'S BODY RUNS A MARATHON DAILY TO SURVIVE
When she was eleven days old, Katie Grace Groebner (born July 16, 2002) of Mankato, MN, began fainting about once
per week. At age three, Katie Grace developed a heart murmur that doctors said she would outgrow. In February
2008, tests showed that Katie Grace had pulmonary hypertension curable only by a heart lung transplant.
In August 2008, the Groebners moved to Clayton, CA to began treatment at Stanford Hospital. Although Katie Grace
receives medication by vein 24 hours a day, she will cheer runners and walkers at The Relay finish.
RICH CLARKE, Redwood City, CA, August 6, 1953 - December 10, 2008
While preparing for his fifth triathlon in 1990, Rich Clarke was found to have pulmonary fibrosis which slowly
destroyed his lungs. While the Lung Distance Runners from United Airlines ran 199 miles for their beloved boss
during The Relay 2007, Rich volunteered at Exchange 24. Within 12 hours of volunteering on May 6, 2007, Rich
received new lungs. While the Lung Distance Runners ran again for Rich in 2008, Rich led the Lung Distance
Walkers 128 miles from Marin to Santa Cruz.
CAROLYN PROVIDES SPECIAL EDUCATION
In 1999 at age 40, Carolyn Langford of Concord, CA, learned that she had Primary Biliary Cirrhosis. As an avid
hiker and special education teacher (for 24 years), Carolyn "did not have time for a disease." Carolyn's
sister, Ellen, ran in the 2001-2003 Relays before passing in 2004. In 2007 and 2008, Carolyn walked on the
Flaming Calla Lilies, captained by her sister, Maggie. To provide special education regarding the lack of organ
donors, Carolyn will again walk 128 miles with the Calla Lilies in 2009.
ORU RELAYS THE MESSAGE BY GENERATING $25 MILLION IN PUBLICITY
promoting donation through The Relay and other events. From 1997-2008, the ORU Kiddie
Pede ran to victory in the Bay to Breakers.
