Former Champions Slow and Steady and What's The Hurry Prepare
For 129-mile Walk.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA April 1, 2012 - During The Relay Walk San Francisco on May 5-6, teams of 12 will start from the Marin French Cheese Co. and walk 129 miles to the Swanton Berry Farm in Davenport promoting the need for donated organs through ORU. The transfer of the baton from walker to walker symbolizes the transfer of an organ from donor to recipient.
ILP Slow and Steady finished first in 2011 and ILP What's The Hurry finished first in 2009 while walking for Katie Grace Groebner who needs a new heart and lungs. The Flaming Calla Lilies won in 2007, 2008 and 2010 while walking for Carolyn Langford and in memory of Ellen Schlegel, both sisters of Captain Maggie Shephard.
Fighting 4 Kurtis (teams 1 and 2) walked for Kurtis Lindsay (born 11/26/03) whose body walked a marathon daily to survive until he received a new heart in 2006. In 2010 and 2011, Kurtis joined his family and friends as they crossed the finish. In 2012, Kurtis will cheer from above as Fighting 4 Kurtis Angels (teams 1 and 2) cross the finish on the one year annniversay of his passing.
The Relay Walk is not about being the fastest. It is about doing the best one can for their team in a celebration of life and walking. While conquering as a team what few dare to face alone, walkers work together to meet challenges and overcome hardships during the 24-hour adventure. With music, food, full moon and glow jewelry, "California's Longest Party" is "the most fun 24 feet can have…in the best place on earth."
Organs R Us was founded in San Francisco in 1996 and supports 110,000 Americans waiting for organs. ORU has generated publicity about the shortage of organs worth $25 million and won numerous awards. In the long run, organ donation saves lives.
